Booking school visits

I had a blast visiting so many wonderful elementary, middle, and high schools last fall. If you’re looking to schedule an author visit for the spring, now is the time! Some of my favorite topics to talk about are:

• Meet the Author – this is a general, basic talk that covers how a book gets made, what an author’s job is like, how a person grows up to be a writer, etc.
• How an Author Conducts Research – how I research information when I’m writing historical fiction, non-fiction, or even contemporary stories. What’s the first step? How do I get accurate information? How do I go beyond google?
• Poetry Plunge – This is a small group (25 kids or less) writing workshop in which we look at a few poetic forms and try our hands at writing poems of our own.
• Social Action in the Classroom – in which I go into greater detail about the Guatemalan conflict and the role the U.S. played. (This is really best for grades 8 and up.)

I’ve also talked about revision, character development, and Spectacular Sentences. I’ve done workshops for teachers, writers, and students of all ages. Send me an email at info@skilabrown.com if you’re interested in more information.

And welcome back to school this week!
