School Visit Info

I’m excited to be visiting several classrooms this fall to talk about Caminar. If you’re a teacher, interested in an author visit, you can email me at info@skilabrown.com for more information. Wondering what kinds of talks I like to do?

Here’s what I’ve done for other schools:
• Meet the Author – this is a general, basic talk that covers how a book gets made, what an author’s job is like, how a person grows up to be a writer, etc.
• Revision, Revision, Revision – what it looks like, why it’s important, how I approach it.
• How an Author Conducts Research – how I research information when I’m writing historical fiction, non-fiction, or even contemporary stories. What’s the first step? How do I get accurate information? How do I go beyond google?
• Poetry Plunge – This is a small group (25 kids or less) writing workshop in which we look at a few poetic forms and try our hands at writing poems of our own.
• Social Action in the Classroom – in which I go into greater detail about the Guatemalan conflict and the role the U.S. played. (This is really best for grades 8 and up.)
I’m open to other topics, so if there’s something in particular you think would work well, just ask.

My fall calendar is pretty full, but I’m already making plans for the spring. April is National Poetry Month! I’d love to visit your classroom to do some poetry workshops. I do charge a small fee for in-person visits, but if your classroom has read Caminar together, I’m happy to do a 20 minute Q&A for free over Skype.

Just send me an email – info@skilabrown.com – and we’ll talk about rates and availability.
