Last month I had the good fortune to spend a day in the Indianapolis Public Library in some very good company.
The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award is a celebration of books and authors in the great state of Indiana. From the website:
The goal of the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award is to elevate the written arts in Indiana, inspiring Hoosiers’ love of reading and attracting greater attention to “home-grown” literary greats. The Award celebrates authors whose quality work has made, or has the potential to make, a lasting public impact.
I was honored to be a finalist for the Emerging Author Award, along with Clifford Garstrang and Laura Bates, both of whom are talented writers but also delightful human beings. We had a wonderful time all day at various events. And since then, I’ve have the good pleasure of reading both their work.
Shakespeare Saved My Life by Laura Bates is an inspiring memoir about a professor’s journey teaching Shakespeare to people in prison. It’s thought-provoking, opinion-changing, and mind-opening. The kind of book that should be required reading for life. I can’t recommend it enough.
The stories in Clifford Garstrang’s In An Uncharted Territory are emotionally gripping, with interesting, complicated characters and a vivid setting. I can’t wait to read What the Zhang Boys Know.
I’ve also been enjoying the poetry of Marianne Boruch and Adrian Matejka. Indiana has such amazing artistic talent! Go forth and check out these incredible authors!
