Chimney Rock
Last spring, I had the good fortune to retrace the steps of the Donner Party. This post is part of the story of my journey. If you want to begin at the beginning, go here first. Big thanks to the Indiana Arts Council for helping to make this happen.
So Chimney Rock! We saw it from the car! And then, we pulled over and saw it up close.
Chimney Rock is one of many natural landmarks that let emigrants know they were on the right path. The Donner Party would have looked for it and felt relieved to crest a hill and see it, knowing they were one step closer.
Closer, but not safer.
Also, my teenage son wanted to make sure I saw this sign:
Boys.
We didn’t linger long in front of Chimney Rock. It was hot and dry and dusty. And I was ready to get back on the road. Wyoming was up next.
And, oh my gosh. Wyoming is the real deal. The speed limit there was 80 MPH! Nobody messes around in Wyoming.
Next stop: Ft. Laramie!
